The Boys has a cynical view of superheroes, depicting them as depraved monsters... and CaptainMarvel agrees. Carol was forced to face off with new superhero sensation Star, only to discover she was a cutthroat villain even worse than Homelander.
There are few franchises less similar than Marvel and The Boys, but sometimes they have been known to share some similar viewpoints regarding the morality of superheroes and the danger they pose to society. For instance, one issue of Captain Marvel proves The Boys’ hero cynicism is completely justified.
The Boys is a comic book series by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson that follows a government-affiliated group known as The Boys who are tasked with keeping superheroes in check whenever they step out of line.
Star was a decent enough person before she got her powers as readers got to know her as a curious and tenacious journalist before she made the villainous transformation earlier in the series. However, once she got a taste of true power, the Captain Marvel villain became utterly corrupted and didn’t have a problem with killing millions of people for her own benefit, which is not unlike the supes in The Boys.
The Boys series makes it clear that it believes absolute power corrupts absolutely, regardless of whether or not the person in question is regarded as a superhero. Any human who is granted powerful abilities will use them in selfish, and sometimes harmful ways. While that viewpoint is incredibly cynical, Captain Marvel proves that the sentiment of The Boys is completely justified as power that isn’t earned can corrupt even the most decent person.
