Marvel is finally explaining why DoctorStrange & ScarletWitch's magic is so different. Strange's white magic leaves 'hands as clean as a surgeon's,' while Wanda's black magic leaves its practitioners 'black with blood and heavy with venom.'
While Doctor Strange and Wanda Maximoff, aka the Scarlet Witch, are two of Marvel's most powerful practitioners of magic, the two tend to wield the mystic arts quite differently. While Doctor Strange's spells generally draw on magical patrons and create specific and limited effects, Scarlet Witch instead projects energy that influences the world around her in a near-endless variety of ways.
Despite being contemporaries, Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch have clashed many times. Prior to the reality-bending events of House of M, Doctor Strange tried to help Wanda get her powers under control, but he was unable to prevent her Chaos Magic from running wild .
These characterizations are the clearest picture yet of how Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch differ in their uses of magic. The reference to surgeon's hands is a clear nod to Doctor Strange, a former surgeon who still often characterizes magic as "surgery on reality." Meanwhile, Scarlet Witch is one of the foremost practitioners of black magic, and has paid again and again for the use of her powers, most recently taking the dark influence of the elder god Chthon into her own body.
That's not to say the two have never dabbled in the other's philosophy - Doctor Strange has fallen back on black magic on occasions such as World War Hulk, where he harnessed a demonic entity to fight the Green Goliath - but even here, the 'rules' seem to apply.
This white magic/black magic approach is a fascinating way to characterize Marvel's mystical landscape, and puts both characters into sharper relief. Scarlet Witch has long been depicted as someone struggling with immense power, whereas Doctor Strange's 'above it all' arrogance is his fatal flaw.
