Becky Malinsky, the fashion editor behind the popular Substack, “5 Things You Should Buy” launches a holiday capsule with Alex Mill that you can seamlessly integrate into your wardrobe.
Becky Malinsky knows a thing or two about fashion. For many years, she worked in editorial at Glamour and the Wall Street Journal; she's also a stylist and a consultant, and now she runs the wildly popular Substack “5 Things You Should Buy.
” In her newsletter, Malinsky shares digestible fashion tips and shopping recommendations that help her thousands of subscribers cut through the endless clutter online. So it makes sense that Alex Mill, a brand known for its equally streamlined approach to elevated wardrobe basics, tapped Malinsky to collaborate on a special holiday capsule. The partnership felt like a natural fit for both parties because “we share a very similar ethos,” Malinksy shares with Bazaar. “We like things to be fun and light and whimsical, but we are also very grounded in the reality of people getting dressed.” Malinky and the Alex Mill team had a unified vision for what the collection should provide its customers. While the holiday season is all about celebration, how do you articulate that festive touch in your outfit without detracting from your personal style—especially if you’re not someone likely to show up at an event dressed in head-to-toe sequins? Instead of going the glitzy route, they sought to design pieces that could serve as “best-supporting actors.” Items that would layer well and complement what's already in people's wardrobes, but that feel just special enough “so that you can wear them in December when you need to get a little more dressed up,” as Malinsky put it. The color palette is subdued, but light—no black in sight. Instead, it’s focused on navy, lavender, and khaki, played up with a bit of texture, like taffeta and velvet. “They add a little depth while not making you feel like you’re going to stand out in a way that you wouldn’t want to,” Malinsky says. While the capsule is comprised of just 8 pieces, the beauty of each item lies in its versatility. The pieces are designed to be mixed, matched, and rotated within your wardrobe, both during the holiday season and beyond. Ahead, Malinsky shares a few of her favorite ways to style the collection. The Blazer This jacket is made of a soft wool crepe and cut like a men’s blazer—a bit boxy and oversized, designed for a relaxed fit. While you can pair it with its matching pants for a complete suit, Malinksy also recommends adding a more playful touch by styling it with the collection’s taffeta Foshay skirt. The blazer helps “ground the skirt and gives it a bit of weight to make it so it doesn’t pop out too much,” says Malinsky. To make it appropriate for the evening, she suggests wearing it with a plain black T-shirt; for daytime, swap in a cream sweater. You can also go the preppy route and pair the blazer with a pair of “washed-out old blue jeans” and “tuck those slim jeans into a riding boot.” Finish it off with a cable knit sweater or a polo cashmere knit. The Velvet EnsembleEmbrace the season with a pair of crushed velvet pants in sweet lavender. While velvet may seem intimidating, Malinsky’s approach ensures that comfort and ease are still secured. The velvet adds a bit of luster for the season, while keeping you cozy and warm. Want a pared-down look? Try the pants with a plaid shirt. The Day-to-Night Anorak “We really wanted to have some sort of evening jacket in the collection, and we experimented with so many different ideas of what that could be. Most of them felt just too dressy for the Alex Mill mix,” said Malinsky. “We loved the fabric so much from the skirt that we wanted that same fabric for the jacket, to play with the idea of sporty and dressy at the same time.” Which is how the taffeta anorak was born. The blend between a sporty, utilitarian coat silhouette and the dressy fabric creates an appealing juxtaposition. You can dress it up or down depending on the occasion. For a formal event, Malinsky suggests styling it with a black-tie dress; for a more casual outing, pair it with either jeans or the navy suit pants and a button-down shirt. The Shimmery SetFor the shopper who shies away from metallics and shimmer, Malinsky and Alex Mill created a party look that's a little more low-key. You can layer the lamé sweater over a slinky matching dress or mix and match it with a leather mini skirt and the anorak.
