Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., introduced a bill Thursday that, if passed, would ban the use of the term 'West Bank' in federal government materials.

The bill would bar federal funds from going toward the preparation or promotion of any executive orders, policies, regulations, guidances, notices, briefings or other materials which refer to the area as such.

Sen. Cotton’s legislation is called the Retiring the Egregious Confusion Over the Genuine Name of Israel’s Zone of Influence by Necessitating Government-use of Judea and Samaria, or RECOGNIZING Judea and Samaria, Act. Israel refers to the West Bank as Judea and Samaria. “The Jewish people’s legal and historic rights to Judea and Samaria goes back thousands of years,” Sen. Cotton said in aThe secretary of state can issue a waiver for the ban if they determine doing so is in the best interest of the U.S., according to the legislation. Rep. Claudia Tenney, R-N.Y., introduced the same bill in the House of Representatives.

"The Israeli people have an undeniable and indisputable historical and legal claim over Judea and Samaria, and at this critical moment in history, the United States must reaffirm this," the congresswoman said. Rep. Tenney added that the bill “reaffirms Israel’s rightful claim to its territory,” noting she is committed to defending “the integrity of the Jewish state.”
