mcu's iron man alongside a mystery superman-esque hero
Marvel is about to turn the Avengers franchise on its head, bringing the entire Marvel Universe together for an epochal battle. But new information suggests that Marvel has already secretly introduced a Superman-tier new character.
Marvel's Mysterious New Hero Is the Harbinger of ARMAGEDDON In a recent press release, Marvel revealed details for the upcoming Avengers: Armageddon event series. The story will see the Avengers assemble to defeat the Red Hulk, while also tangling with new superbeings created by the mysterious Origin Boxes. In previous promotional materials , Marvel showed a caped figure holding an Origin Box. Most fans took the figure to be a stand-in for the new superheroes and villains who will emerge from this event, rather than an actual character. However, new promo material shows the same figure, this time with glowing red eyes and a star logo. This repetition makes it clear that the character isn't just a stand-in, but almost certainly a character within the event. Indeed, given the focus put on the Origin Boxes, I'm willing to bet this character will be codenamed 'Armageddon' and form the heart of the event. In recent Wolverine and Captain America comics, a new Weapon X style group have begun new experiments to create new superheroes on the same theme as Wolverine and Captain America. That star logo suggests the mysterious figure is a result of these 'Primewarrior' experiments - a new iteration on Captain America with powers similar to DC's Superman. What Are Origin Boxes, And Why Do They Matter? Over in Marvel's Ultimate Universe imprint, the villainous Maker used time travel to prevent the emergence of most of Marvel's superheroes. When Tony Stark discovered the truth, he created 'Origin Boxes' - sealed boxes which, when opened, imbue their target with the superpowers they should have had. The Origin Boxes were a disaster in-universe, killing heroes including Captain Marvel, and were later taken to the mainstream Earth-616 by Miles Morales for safekeeping and handed over to Misty Knight as a government agent. Given Primewarrior's goal of creating new superhumans, it's likely they'll steal some or all of the Origin Boxes and set about creating their own tame superhumans. That would suggest this mysterious figure will have the powers of some familiar character - perhaps Wonder Man or Sentry, given the flying and glowing eyes. The Armageddon Event Is About to Change Avengers Lore Forever Armageddon is set to be a genuinely huge event, revamping the Avengers after over a decade of poorly received comics. Marvel's press release promises that: AVENGERS: ARMAGEDDON leads to a transformative shakeup of the team - the likes of which haven’t been felt since Avengers: Disassembled. ... There will be a pre-Armageddon Marvel Universe and a post-Armageddon Marvel Universe. Given the focus on Origin Boxes, fans have speculated that the event will introduce a lot of new heroes and villains. However, the use of the star-icon character suggests this mysterious individual may be the most important of the lot. Avengers: Armageddon is deliberately echoing the Avengers' formation by having a new team to assemble to battle Red Hulk, just as the original team formed to bring down the Hulk. That's a bold statement about how important this chapter is going to be in wider Avengers lore. And if we're right, that flying, cape-wearing figure is going to be right at the heart of a historic moment for the Avengers franchise.
