Burger King says its pancake-like Whopper problem is a thing of the past. On Feb. 26, the chain announced that its signature burger was due for a makeover, ending a decade of customer complaints. The chain’s bestseller has a few new-and-improved elements, including a “better-tasting” bun, a new “creamier” mayonnaise, and a clamshell box instead of paper .

“So the Whopper being smushed, literally, I’ve heard it… and we’ve seen it,” said Tom Curtis, president of Burger King US and Canada, to CNN. “ improved packaging that kind of holds it together. The creamier mayonnaise frankly just came from some franchisees who said they wanted to see a more premium mayonnaise,' he continued. 'And then also upgrading and premium-izing the bun.” These changes are the first to the Whopper in 10 years and were “inspired by direct Guest feedback,” as evidenced by plenty of it on social media sites like Reddit. “every time I pick up a whopper it falls apart…. but why tho?” one Redditor wrote in 2023, and more than one Redditor has said the old Whopper had become a “slider.” There are some aspects of the Whopper that remain unchanged, like its” quarter-pound of 100% flame-grilled” patty and other toppings. These changes will cost each store $4,000 a year, but franchisees were told not to raise prices, per CNN. Opinions on the new Whopper are already flooding in: one customer on Reddit announced they “loved” the changes. Another customer on X had a mixed reaction, saying it was “good, but there’s no mayo on it.” There was even one fan who said that they “liked how the buns were flat,” proof that you can’t please everyone. This isn’t the only big change coming to Burger King: on Feb. 26, the chain revealed to The Verge that it was launching an AI chatbot named “Patty.” The OpenAI-powered program, which will live in employee headsets and help with common tasks, also listens to how often workers adhere to the chain’s “friendliness” scale by detecting words and phrases like “welcome to Burger King,” “please,” and “thank you.”
