New surveillance video captured yet another shooting near 101 St. and Aurora Avenue, with this latest incident happening early Wednesday morning.

The Republican National Convention wraps up Thursday night with Donald Trump expected to make his first public comments since being shot.A still photo from surveillance video that captured gunfire that occurred along Aurora Avenue in Seattle on the morning of July 17, 2024.

New surveillance video captured yet another shooting near 101 St. and Aurora Avenue, with this latest incident happening early Wednesday morning, just before 1:30 a.m. Police believe these shootings are in part tied to sex trafficking and turf wars in the area and are trying to clamp down on the violence neighbors are dealing with almost nightly.“It's been almost a nightly occurrence, lately it seems. It's not just the weekends. It's during the week, and so that is scary to live with,” one neighbor who wanted to remain anonymous said.Seattle Councilmember Cathy Moore, who represents the area, says she met with Seattle Police Department Chief Sue Rahr this week to form a plan, and they’re working on both immediate and long-term solutions to help, like bringing back the city’s loitering ordinance. Seattle police said they’ve responded to 31 shots fired and shooting incidents between 85th and 125th along Aurora Avenue in the last two months. The SPD is putting traffic enforcement and community response officers in the area daily and nightly to target the gun violence in the area they believe is tied to gang activity, sex trafficking, and turf wars between pimps.“This is criminal activity, and it's creating danger in our community, and we are not going to tolerate it anymore,” Moore said. Moore is currently working on bringing back a loitering ordinance, which was repealed by the previous council in 2020. “We have the Johns who are buying the services, and then we have the pimps who are exploiting, and so the bill is really trying to look at that whole ecosystem of actors and targeting each one specifically,” Moore said. “Looking at ways to create wrap-around social services and off-ramps for the women, but being much more focused on saying to the buyers and the exploiters.”“Right now, immediately, we need to take steps to protect our families and protect our children from being traumatized over and over whenever they hear a loud bang, and so I hope that the city needs to act quickly,” one neighbor said. “And I wish that the city that Mayor Harrell and our council would get behind this loitering law reinstated to give the police the mechanism to approach the prostitutes and follow up on the pimps so we can be safe again.”Residents say they’ve tried putting in more security measures like cameras and more lighting. The streets and alleys have now been blocked off to traffic, and neighbors came up with this website,Meanwhile, Moore said she’s also trying to secure funding for a receiving center to help connect trafficked women with immediate resources. She hopes to introduce their proposal for a loitering ordinance before the end of summer.
