James Callis in Slow Horses Season 5

It's easy to see why spy thrillers are so popular with today's television audiences. These types of series offer high-octane action and daring characters that provide an escape from everyday life. Shows like The Day of the Jackal, Black Doves, and The Agency have all easily won over viewers, but there's only one Apple TV spy thriller that is truly worthy of a binge-watch.

What Is 'Slow Horses' About? Slow Horses premiered back in 2022, but it's already proved itself to be one of the best dramas on television, and with just six episodes per season, it's actually easy to catch up on the whole show if you haven't watched it already. Based on a series of books by Mick Herron, Slow Horses centers around an agent from the British spy organization MI5, River Cartwright . In the series premiere, River messes up on a training exercise and is relegated to Slough House, where all MI5's rejects end up. Led by the irascible and slovenly Jackson Lamb , the agents at Slough House form a dysfunctional found family. Each season follows a different case that River, Jackson, and the members of Slough House must unravel, often at great cost to their personal safety. Although these spies are considered the bottom of the barrel, they are completely dedicated to their jobs. This leads to action-packed missions and undercover operations, while still allowing the series' wry humor to shine through.Posts 3 By Erin Konrad Apple TV's 'Slow Horses' Is a Thrilling and Addictive Spy Series As we get to know more about the inhabitants of Slough House, these characters become like friends you've known your whole life . Slow Horses is immensely fun to watch because you can't wait to see what these characters will get themselves mixed up in next. The series isn't merely a character study of a group of fascinating individuals; it's also an incredibly smart drama that incorporates the complex dynamics of our current political scene, as well as the twists and turns of criminal investigations. All of these elements work together to create suspenseful episodes that feel propulsive and will keep you on the edge of your seat. There's heart in Slow Horses' storytelling, but that doesn't mean that you should get too attached to the show's ensemble. The writers aren't afraid to kill off a main character or two, which only adds to the intensity of the narrative. As fantastic as the writing for Slow Horses is, the acting is just as notable. Oldman steals every scene he's in as the abrasive, yet secretly dedicated Jackson, and Lowden has mastered the frustrated and hapless River. Within just a few episodes, it becomes clear why both of the actors have netted Emmy nominations for their work in the series. The supporting cast is equally fantastic. Kristin Scott Thomas is perfection as the icy, adept Diana Taverner, who runs things at MI5, and Saskia Reeves provides the heart of Slough House as the kind and maternal Catherine Standish. The comic relief is often provided by Christopher Chung, whose character, Roddy Ho, is arguably the most cocky and obnoxious but equally endearing member of Slough House. Jonathan Pryce has landed an Emmy nomination for his moving portrayal of River's grandfather, a former spy who heartbreakingly develops memory decline. This collaboration between the cast creates a realistic and compelling framework for the series' spy games. Slow Horses has become a hit with Emmy voters, with 14 total nominations for Seasons 4 and 5 and two wins for Outstanding Writing and Directing, but perhaps even more impressive is the show's 97% Rotten Tomatoes score. Seasons 6 and 7 have already been greenlit, which means now is the perfect time to binge your way through this masterpiece of a series. There might be plenty of spy thrillers to check out, but Slow Horses is the only one we're betting you'll become obsessed with.
