Brad Pitt on the red carpet
Some war movies are built around pure spectacle, while others lean into secrecy, suspicion, and the kind of tension that can destroy people long before the bullets start flying. Allied sits firmly in that second lane.
It arrived with a lot of prestige behind it, but it never quite became the awards juggernaut some expected. Even so, it has held onto a certain appeal over the years, especially for viewers who like their World War II dramas with a little more romance, glamour, and paranoia mixed in. That overlooked thriller is now heading to Paramount+ on April 1. It is one of the more polished titles in the streamer’s next wave of movie additions, and it feels like exactly the kind of film that is ripe for rediscovery now that some distance has grown between it and its original release. The cast includes Brad Pitt as Max Vatan, Marion Cotillard as Marianne Beauséjour, Jared Harris as Frank Heslop, Simon McBurney as S.O.E. official Blue, Lizzy Caplan as Bridget Vatan, and Matthew Goode as Guy Sangster. Directed by Robert Zemeckis, Allied follows intelligence officer Max Vatan and French Resistance fighter Marianne Beauséjour, who meet during a dangerous wartime mission and then build a life together in London. But once their relationship deepens, so do the suspicions around it, and the movie shifts from romantic war drama into something much more uneasy. It is a handsomely made, old-school studio thriller that knows exactly how good its stars look and wisely builds the tension around that. Related Remembering the Icons of Film — Collider Movie Quiz We pay tribute to the talents who helped define Hollywood. Posts By Macklen Makhloghi Is 'Allied' Worth Watching? Collider’s review stated that Allied has a strong premise, a classy old-school look, and two very watchable leads, but it never fully comes together. The first half works best, setting up a tense wartime romance between Pitt’s Max and Cotillard’s Marianne as they pose as a married couple on a dangerous mission. It has style, atmosphere, and just enough mystery to pull you in. "Allied feels like a bit of a missed opportunity for everyone involved. Pitt’s been in better World War II movies; Cotillard gives a strong performance, but her character is reduced to an object in the second half; and Zemeckis seems engaged at some point in the narrative and there are other times where he seems to be just going through the motions. Allied is a lackluster effort that should have been much better given the central conflict and setting."
