Apple's new C1 5G modem chip has shown faster downlink speeds than Qualcomm's Snapdragon X71 in early tests, even without support for mmWave networks.

Apple 's in-house 5G modem chip, the C1, has demonstrated faster downlink speeds compared to Qualcomm 's Snapdragon X71 5G modem chip in initial testing. This performance was observed even though the C1 lacks support for the fastest mmWave 5G networks. The test, conducted by Dave2D on Bell Network in Toronto, Canada, showed downlink speeds of 213.84Mbps for the C1 and 152.77Mbps for the Snapdragon X71.

Apple's decision to prioritize sub-6GHz 5G support in the C1 is likely driven by cost considerations and the fact that most U.S. wireless users rarely encounter mmWave networks due to their limited range. While mmWave networks offer significantly faster speeds, they are not as widely deployed as sub-6GHz networks. The test environment in Toronto, with its dense network of cell towers, may have contributed to the C1's superior performance. Dave2D suggests that in areas with less robust 5G coverage, the Snapdragon X71 might demonstrate better results. It's important to note that various factors influence data speeds, including network congestion and distance from cell towers. The Speedtest app used in this test measures a user's internet connection speed, not the speed of the modem itself. Despite these caveats, the initial test results suggest that Apple's in-house 5G modem technology is promising and has the potential to deliver competitive speeds
