Brown joins a Patriots depth chart that didn’t appear to have fallen on hard times without him. It includes Super Bowl LIII MVP Julian Edelman and the reinstated Josh Gordon. It also includes Demaryius Thomas, Phillip Dorsett and undrafted rookies in Jakobi Meyers and Gunner Olszewski. Even a captain since 2011 on special teams in Matthew Slater.In the waiting line is former New Orleans Saint and Chicago Bear Cameron Meredith, as well as No. 32 overall pick N’Keal Harry.
Brown and Gordon have each eclipsed 1,600 yards in a single season. Brown had a league-leading 1,834 in 2015 while Gordon had a league-leading 1,646 in 2013. And the forgotten Thomas? The five-time Denver Broncos Pro Bowler is in that rarefied company, too, having posted 1,619 receiving yards in 2014.All could go up in the air between Brown and the Patriots. But the head coach that was on the right side of the phone call Saturday will look to keep the stakes driven into the ground.
