Let’s look at Belichek’s decision to acquire Brown through the lens of several of Buffett’s most famous quotes.No sports organization has a better track record of acquiring, assimilating and maximizing “distressed assets.” Moss was brilliant for three seasons. In 2010, he showed signs of his previous behavior. Complaining of a lack of appreciation on opening day, he said, “Sometimes you just want your boss to tell you that you’re doing a good job.” Three weeks later, he got into a confrontation with his coaches at halftime. Belichek traded him back to Minnesota the next day.
He left that support system to join the Oakland Raiders, a rebuilding franchise with a young roster and recent history of losing. Brown was placed in the spotlight and expected to lead, a trait he isn’t comfortable with. The Patriots never paid Seymour more than $3.7 million in a season. The Raiders broke the bank, paying Seymour nearly triple that amount over the next four seasons. With Seymour from 2009 to 2012, the Raiders never won more than 8 games and failed to reach the playoffs in each of Seymour’s seasons.
The result for the Patriots is acquiring the same talent at a significant discount. The Patriots locked Brown up on a one-year contract with only $9 million in guaranteed money, an offer that would have been laughed at by Brown’s agent in January. Belichek rarely falls for the pressure to take major swings unless he sees obvious value. In Brown, he sees a reasonable risk/reward equation with a lofty ceiling and a manageable floor."Has it ever been this quiet in here? I don't think it has," linebacker Tedy Bruschi, Milloy's rookie roommate in 1996, said in the locker room."I think 'shocked' is the word. . . .
