Mercedes-AMG pushes deeper into electrification with a striking GT SUV that pairs dramatic design with huge power

AMG is developing its first fully in-house SUV on a dedicated EV platform. The upcoming GT SUV is expected to launch around 2027 in global markets. A tri-motor setup could deliver over 1,300 hp with rear-biased dynamics.

The question hanging over Mercedes-AMG’s next big move is simple. Will its all-electric GT 4-Door Coupe land as a genuine hit, or quietly turn into a very expensive lesson on high-end EVs? That answer won’t come until later this year when sales finally begin, yet AMG is already looking further ahead. AMG is already deep into the development of its next EV, taking the shape of a high-powered SUV to rival the new Porsche Cayenne Electric. Internally, the model is currently referred to as the “GT SUV,” and it is expected to arrive in key markets around 2027. Read: Mercedes-AMG’s New GLC Is Going After Macan EV With Supercar Power Fresh spy shots have already offered the clearest glimpse yet of what AMG is cooking, and now a set of renderings attempts to fill in the blanks. Whether the final design sticks this closely to the previews is another matter entirely, though one thing feels certain. This will not be a shy or subtle SUV. It's also worth pointing out that, unlike previous efforts, this SUV is being developed from the ground up by AMG itself, rather than reworked from an existing Mercedes-Benz platform. While some EVs have eschewed front grilles in favor of fascias with little to no personality, AMG appears to be heading in the opposite direction. These renderings from Nikita Chuyko for Kolesa showcase it with a gaping grille similar to last year’s AMG GT XX concept, complete with an illuminated outer edge. Elsewhere, the GT SUV rocks a pair of large air intakes, a light bar, and a pair of headlights that will likely resemble those of the AMG GT 4-Door EV, complete with star-shaped LEDs. Prototype sightings also point to flush, retractable door handles, a detail aimed at improving aerodynamic efficiency. However, with China’s new rules banning hidden door handles, AMG may need to rethink the design or engineer a market-specific workaround. Concept Car Looks The model's side profile is shaping up to be quite sleek, with slightly squared-off arches clad in black. For as bold as the front-end is, the rear could take things to a new level, sporting six circular LED taillights just like the AMG GT XX concept, along with the possibility of a pronounced diffuser to match. Dimensionally, the SUV is expected to slot between the EQE SUV and EQS SUV in size. As for the interior, we haven’t yet had a proper look inside the prototypes, but we have a strong sense of where this is heading. Expect it to closely mirror the design and layout of the AMG GT 4-Door, reworked for the higher seating position of an SUV. From the images, you can tell that it leans more heavily into a driver-focused layout than we typically see from Mercedes. There’s a lot of digital real estate on offer, led by a 14-inch central touchscreen angled toward the driver rather than sitting flat across the dash. It’s paired with a 10.2-inch driver display, while a separate 14-inch screen on the passenger side completes the setup. An EV Powerhouse It’s not just the design of the GT SUV that will turn heads. The powertrain is expected to be equally attention-grabbing. Like the related sedan, the SUV will ride on the new AMG.EA architecture and use advanced axial flux motors supplied by Yasa. Sitting at the top of the range should be a model with three of these motors, delivering 1,341 hp and out-muscling the Cayenne Electric Turbo with its 1,156 hp. In this configuration, one motor is expected to power the front axle while two drive the rear, enabling a more rear-biased performance setup. Less powerful, dual-motor versions can also be expected. To compensate for the absence of a traditional internal combustion engine, AMG is also developing a soundscape intended to mimic the burble of a V8. SH Proshots
