The Mules earned a big District 26-5A win against the Chargers, who had eliminated them in the playoffs the last two seasons.

Alamo Heights senior guard Matthew Munguia scored a game-high 17 points against Boerne Champion to give the Mules a 53-46 overtime win over the Chargers on Tuesday at the Muledome . The District 26-5A battle was the first meeting between the two teams since Champion bounced Alamo Heights out of the playoffs in each of the last two seasons.

The Mules fans filled their side of the gym decked out in all white to support their team. “It stings,” Alamo Heights coach Andrew Brewer said. “You can tell how important it was to these kids in our community, and we took care of it.” Free throw shooting was the deciding factor in Tuesday’s game as the Mules went 10 for 10 from the stripe in overtime. The Chargers made the first basket in the extra period but didn’t make another until a 3 from junior guard Quinn Grable fell with under a minute to play. Munguia knocked down the final pair to ice the game. After a Mules timeout, Alamo Heights went on an 11-4 run to tie the game at 37. “It wasn’t much to say other than to do what I was telling you to do,” Brewer told his team during the timeout. “Just got to remind them what we’re trying to do.” Alamo Heights took a 39-37 lead before a 3-pointer from freshman Nick Georgelos put the Chargers back in front. A steal from the Mules led to a fast-break layup from Beau Taber, and Champion tied the game at 41 with a free throw from Logan Scott. Junior forward Alex Eliott missed the potential game-winning 3. Eliott finished the game with 10 points while Beau and sophomore forward Jack Brewer each had nine. Georgelos led the Chargers with 14. Brewer credited their losses to Westlake and Belton, both coming by a combined six points, for the late-game execution. “We didn’t make any in the first half, but we knocked them down down the stretch,” he said. “Westlake and Belton really got us ready for this moment.” READ MORE: Express-News Top 10 boys basketball rankings After finishing 15-1 and district champs in 27-5A in back to back seasons, the Mules' expectations for winning 26-5A are a little different. Now paired with Champion again along with Veterans Memorial and Wagner, Brewer expects a dogfight for the title. “The district champion is going to go 12-4, 13-3,” he said. “We’re short-term goals. It’s still so early.” Champion returns to face Boerne at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Boerne Champion High School. Alamo Heights will play Boerne at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Boerne High School.
