A coalition of state and local law enforcement officials announced a new task force in Alabama's capital called the Metro Area Crime Suppression Unit. At a news conference Thursday, officials said that the unit aims to address staffing shortages in the Montgomery Police Department amid a series of high-profile violent crimes citywide.

In the 12 days that the unit has been in operation, the task force has arrested nearly 50 people and made over 400 traffic stops, Interim Montgomery Police Chief James Graboys said.
