The Montgomery City Council addressed initiatives on public safety and the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts . MONTGOMERY , Ala. - The Montgomery City Council addressed initiatives on public safety and the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts at its meeting Tuesday night.
The council voted unanimously to dismiss the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts resolution that would have given the city more control of the venue. “The city was wanting to take over the museum board,” said Councilman Glen Pruitt. “And for the life of me, I don’t know why we wanted to do that. It’s been working since Noah built the ark.” “We killed the resolution from a city standpoint, and then we added something that they can pay the stipend to get qualified people to come in and help run the museum,” said City Council President Cornelius “CC” Calhoun. “So we moved it along, so we’re still ongoing, discussing, I don’t think that’s the end of it. We’ll keep working with it with our lawyers and their lawyers.” Pruitt reintroduced two public safety ordinances he initially addressed at the last meeting. First up, Pruitt wanted to increase proposed pay raises for high ranking officials within the Montgomery Police Department. “It was approved. We finally put that to bed,” said Pruitt. “So the majors and the captains are included, and they’ll get the whole 15%.” Councilor Calhoun had a different tone, saying “I’m still kind of a little disappointed in the vote from the council on the pay raise. As we continue to increase these raises and things, those are increases in our budget. We got to find revenue to support that.” Pruitt’s other ordinance was to fund the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office as they help MPD with patrolling. That initiative got carried over after legal and budgetary concerns.Calhoun disagreed with Pruitt again on this measure, saying, “It’s politics being politics 101. We’ll throw it out there.
