As rural hospitals continue to shutter across Alabama, state lawmakers are actively seeking solutions to keep these vital facilities operational. On Wednesday, Democratic leaders from rural counties voiced their concerns about the future of healthcare in the state.
Rep. Thomas Jackson highlighted the dire situation in Clark County, stating, "Right now Clark County doesn't have pediatrics care. Not to mention the nearest hospital that delivers babies is 65 miles away. This problem is not going away by any means soon because we are continuing to see rural hospitals cut patient service and permanently close their doors." In response, the Rural Health and Transformation Program was launched in Alabama late last year. This state initiative aims to sustain healthcare in nearly 60 rural counties with hundreds of millions of dollars in funding. Gov. Kay Ivey appointed Rep. Pebblin Warren to the program. Warren noted, "Alabama has been awarded 203 million to prevent more rural hospitals from closing. To expand medical and mental health services and to recruit more medical and mental health professionals in our rural areas."Throughout the legislative session, lawmakers are addressing rural healthcare with several bills. These include proposals for increased tax incentives for doctors working in rural hospitals and expanded tax credit programs for those donating to these facilities.
