We talk to Scott Hansen, the creative electronic music force known as Tycho, in advance of his live ensemble's performance at the House of Blues on Tuesday, January 21.
Scott Hansen and his electronic music outfit Tycho perform at House of Blues this Tuesday, January 21 at 7 p.m., he concocts atmospheric music that traverses ambient, electronic and post-rock styles with organic flair and more traditional instrumentation. “Evocative” is an understatement.Having been a graphic designer for over a decade, Hansen understands the intersection of humanity and technology like few do.
Cleveland.com: How does your work as a graphic designer influence your music composition, and do you ever “hear” visuals or “see” music before composing a track? Tycho’s music is often uplifting, moody and atmospheric. Do you compose music with a completely different emotional tone, something darker or dissonant?] that leans that way. I would call it quote-unquote darker, but my threshold is different from what other people might think of as dark. It’s definitely a tonal shift, Over the last like five years, I have a lot of content which fits that bill but didn’t fit in the direction I was headed.
Your work is deeply inspired by nature. Have you ever experimented with incorporating actual natural frequencies into your music? If you could collaborate with a non-musical artist or creator – perhaps a filmmaker, writer, or architect – who would it be and what would you create together? Fair enough! What do you hope listeners take away from Tycho’s music in 50 or 100 years, when you’re no longer around to explain it?
