The Cleveland Orchestra and Chorus will host the third Opera and Humanities Festival, exploring the theme of 'Reconciliation' through performances of Leoš Janáček's opera 'Jenůfa' and other musical events.
The Cleveland Orchestra and Chorus will present the third edition of the Opera and Humanities Festival at Severance Music Center in May. The theme of this year’s festival is “ Reconciliation ,” anchored by three concert performances of Czech composer Leoš Janáček ’s opera “Jenůfa.” This raw, engaging, and “morally complex” work will be led by music director Franz Welser-Möst and features The Cleveland Orchestra and Chorus. Festival concerts will showcase musical treasures by Poulenc, J.S.
Bach, Ustvolskaya and R. Strauss. Events will also include “The Moth Mainstage: Live from Severance” and “The Women of Chicago’s Black Renaissance,” which features pianist Michelle Cann. A number of no-cost, open-to-the-public offerings from the orchestra include “Opera Curious? The World of Jenůfa” and the return of “United in Song! A Community Celebration.” The festival aims to explore how reconciliation “shapes relationships, societies, and cultures — highlighting its challenges, triumphs, and enduring relevance in a fractured world,” according to the orchestra’s news release on Wednesday. “Jenůfa” is a psychological deep-dive into a family in crisis and explores the challenges present in rebuilding trust and respect. At its core, the work unveils the story of a young woman pregnant out of wedlock and how that stresses the relationship with her family. Based on Czech writer and playwright Gabriela Preissová's dramatic work “Her Stepdaughter,” “Jenůfa” is composer Janáček’s most famous operatic work. The festival aims to zoom out from the operatic work to explore how reconciliation — through music and the humanities — can “bridge cultural, political, and religious divides.
