Pianist-filmmaker James Carson will screen his documentary 'Cabin Music' at the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque on January 18th. The screening will be followed by a Q&A and piano recital. The film chronicles Carson's journey backpacking from Spain to Japan and back to the Canadian wilderness where he builds an off-grid cabin.

The music in the film does much to underpin Carson’s philosophy, which feels a lot like Buddhism and Taoism. So does he see “Cabin Music” as something akin to a subconscious program – like computer software – running in the background? Or a self portrait of his creativity? Both?Carson said that people like listening to the music when they paint, write or walk because it helps them stimulate creativity.
What film does that no other medium can do is “take you from one place to another place in the blink of an eye,” Carson added. Joining the mediums allowed a unique, poetic exploration of self.
