Actress Lee Joo-sil, best known for her role as Park Mal-soon in the hit Netflix series 'Squid Game,' has passed away at the age of 81. According to a Korean newspaper, Lee died on Sunday at her family home in Uijeongbu, South Korea. She had been diagnosed with stomach cancer in November 2024.Lee's remarkable life story included overcoming a previous battle with cancer.
When she was in her fifties, she was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer and given a grim prognosis of less than a year to live. However, through strength and determination, she received the all-clear from doctors 13 years later. Lee's portrayal of Park Mal-soon, the mother of police detective Hwang Jun-ho, and stepmother of The Front Man, Hwang In-ho, resonated with audiences worldwide. While there is no official confirmation as to whether Lee filmed scenes for the third and final season of 'Squid Game,' which was completed before her passing and is slated to premiere on Netflix in June 2025, her presence will undoubtedly be missed by fans and colleagues alike
