Police officers have been pulled in from across Canberra to patrol the streets of the CBD as part of a four-week blitz targeting public disorder and crime.
Last year, the ACT decriminalised small amounts of some illicit drugs, meaning the men won't receive a criminal penalty.A short time later, the officers bring their van to a halt outside a popular nightclub to speak with a young, intoxicated man swaying on the footpath."You wanna drug test me?" he slurs. The man wanders off and police find him a few minutes later alone on a bench.Sergeant Hyde escorts him to meet the CBR Night Crew, a first-aid service run by St John Ambulance.
Khushwant Dhanoa, whose barber shop is located on a thoroughfare between Canberra's pubs and restaurants, is among the local business owners who have raised concerns with police.
