He's recovering and undergoing reconstruction surgery at the University of Utah's Hospital.about three weeks ago near Big Sky, Mont. While Noorlander wants to wait a bit longer to share what happened to him from his perspective, his daughter helps him recap what the past few weeks here in Utah have been like. If you asked Noorlander what happened to him on Sept. 8, he might joke that he "French-kissed a bear." It's a kiss that left him without a large chunk of his jaw, so his daughters have been his voice for several weeks, while he writes out his thoughts on whiteboards. Sometimes Katelyn Davis can almost finish her dad's sentences, but other times he surprises her with moving messages. While Noorlander remains extremely positive, some of the biggest challenges have been not being able to talk or taste."He got permission to taste something in over two weeks, and it was like the happiest day ever," Davis said. When he can eat again, he said he's most looking forward to trying the new Texas Roadhouse that opened up by his home."He's been going stir-crazy because he's a man on the move, so mostly he's been putting me to work. I thought we were going to binge-watch TV shows honestly," Davis said. Doctors at the University of Utah used Noorlander's fibula, a bone in his leg, and skin from his arms and legs to reconstruct his jaw. Now, he's hoping to slowly take steps towards talking again.Noorlander wrote that one of his biggest blessings has been all the support from both strangers and from his family. He's gotten to spend a lot of time with people he loves after the incident. Even his nephew, Jaren Lyman, who's usually behind the scenes in our promotions department, interviewed him for this story. Noorlander wrote, "This attack, even though almost tragic, all I can see is blessings coming from this — This truly was an answer to my prayers for the last few years." That's not something you'd expect to hear. But the rest of the story, for now, Noorlander said he wants to wait to recount until he can speak his words. KUTV asked him why he's been writing on a whiteboard instead of typing or texting his thoughts. He said it's more personal that way. Noorlander also has a thought-of-the-day board in his hospital room. The day KUTV visited, he wrote, "A prayer a day keeps the Devil at Bay."
