From the battlefield to breaking silence: The work to help veterans confront mental health crisisWelsey Hazel served 12 years as an infantryman in the U.S. Army. He credits mental health counselors including those at the Birmingham VA with helping him survive his mental health crisis upon returning from service in Iraq Wesley Hazel was a homeless high school dropout when he joined the U.S. Army.
Hazel avoided becoming a part of the state's grim statistic by doing just that, talking to someone but he admitted it wasn't easy. Hazel didn't make the first call. His wife made it for him after she found him in their home with a loaded gun. We support each other. And so, it might be that we're on the phone with a veteran having that conversation of trying to like figure out what can we do, but we're messaging our team saying, 'I need someone to call an ambulance to this veteran's house right now.'went into effect. Now any eligible combat veteran, whether enrolled with VA benefits or not, can go to any any hospital's emergency room to receive emergent suicidal care paid for by the VA.
