Ayelet Zurer as Queen Ahinoam looking to the side at a feast in House of David Season 2
Prime Video’s House of David is back and better than ever for Season 2. This time, the drama, romance, and intrigue have been dialed up to 11 as the biblical biopic returns to streaming. Already a huge hit for Prime, House of David sits in the U.
S. Top 10. Even before its global launch on March 27, the excitement is palpable. In Season 2, all the important characters are back, and the series picks up where it left off, the defeat of the giant Goliath by the humble shepherd boy and musician, David . As David is welcomed back into Saul’s house, he carries the inner turmoil of knowing he has been anointed by the prophet Samuel to be the next king of Israel. Queen Ahinoam sees David as a threat as the people rally behind their “giant slayer.” New characters enter the plotline as romance becomes a recurring theme in Season 2. As House of David combines love and war, it is a fascinating watch, and these six moments delivered the most shocking twists of all. Jonathan and Sara Many may have wondered why an eligible, handsome, and brave young prince like Jonathan was unmarried, especially being first in line to the throne. When he confides in a healer named Sara in Season 2, viewers learn more about his lost love, who died. As sympathies for Jonathan are kindled, wearing his poor, wounded heart on his sleeve, he gets a second chance at love where it was least expected. As Jonathan realizes he has strong feelings for Sara, he works up the courage to ask her to marry him. Only for Sara to turn him down. Sara tells Jonathan that her brother was so inspired by his heroism that he joined the army and was then killed in battle. In her mind, Sara knows it wasn’t Jonathan’s fault directly, but the causality is still there. Jonathan gets to brood for a while as the season goes on, but he eventually realizes he is willing to give everything to be with Sara. House of David Season 2 is full of romance, and Jonathan and Sara’s is one of the most surprising. Not only does Sara first reject his proposal, but then she ultimately accepts it. They also have a small ceremony in the country with her family and friends. A far different occasion than the firstborn of the king would normally have had. A healer from a small village is also not what either of his parents had in mind; he would most likely have been encouraged to wed the daughter of an influential leader for a political alliance. The shocks keep coming in their romance as Jonathan confides in Sara that he knows David is God’s anointed and will be king instead of himself. A secret he has trusted no one else with until now. Saul Tries To Kill Jonathan Saul’s bitterness and blind fear have driven him to some pretty rash actions throughout House of David, but it reaches a pinnacle in Episode 8 when he almost kills Jonathan. As Jonathan and Sara travel back to dine with the king, David gets their attention and tells Jonathan of how he is being hunted by his father. Jonathan is determined to discover the true intentions of the king for himself and vows to confront him. And confront Saul Jonathan does! In a heated argument at the diner table, Jonathan calls Saul out for his manipulative and twisted thinking and his unwarranted hatred against David. Saul’s rage burns hot, and he picks up a spear and launches it at Jonathan. Ever the skilled warrior, Jonathan’s quick reflexes kick in, and he luckily dodges the weapon as it hurls past him. The shock on everyone’s face says it all. Saul’s treachery has now reached a level no one ever expected it would, and if he would be willing to kill his favorite son, no one is safe. Samuel Dies Samuel has been an influential force throughout the series and most of the characters’ lives. He has put Saul in his place and shown no fear. He was also a powerful instrument of God, anointing David as the next king and sharing the prophecies he was given to share. As David seeks Samuel’s help a final time, a poignant scene comes in Season 2 that evokes memories of Season 1, when David was a simple shepherd boy and wholly unprepared for the dramatic direction his life was about to take. Though Saul tried to kill Samuel several times, his death was not at the king’s command. Instead, he peacefully passes away in the arms of his wife. While it is a beautiful ending of Samuel’s storyline in the saga, viewers can’t help but feel a sense of “what now?” Like Gandalf falling to his doom and leaving the fellowship to fend for themselves in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, the party is without a prophet now, and Samuel’s leadership and presence will be sorely missed. Mychal Chooses Not To Go With David In the final episode of Season 2, the truth about David is finally revealed. It has been a well-kept secret from most of the people around David, including his love and newlywed wife, Mychal . Shortly after their wedding, David barges into their room and tells her to pack; they have to escape now, for their lives. When Mychal confronts David, and he tells her the truth, she has only moments to decide whether to go with him or to stay in the palace. Audiences have been wondering how Mychal would react if she ever found out that David is the one who was designated to take her father’s place as king. Instead of rushing to a happy conclusion, House of David gives this moment time to be complicated and messy. It is not a cut-and-dry decision, and Mychal has real feelings of betrayal and confusion. While Mychal loves David, she has just learned that he has been lying to her the whole time, and if she heeds the words of her sister Mirab , her position as a woman makes her a “ladder” men climb to achieve their own ambitions. She might have secretly been suspecting David of using her to get closer to the throne. As a flood of emotions and suspicions comes into her thoughts, Mychal stays. David escapes without her, and she is left at the palace to try and make sense of what has just happened. Saul Exiles Ahinoam Queen Ahinoam is a force to be reckoned with. Played masterfully by the extremely talented Ayelet Zurer, she is intelligent, cunning, and determined. As her influence over the king starts to crumble, viewers begin to wonder if she is fiercely trying to protect her family or her own power. After all, she exiled her son Eshbaal without batting an eye to try to save her family’s public reputation. As Ahinoam and Saul have marital discord, Kazia becomes the king’s concubine. Kazia is ambitious and cunning as well, and she subtly and carefully uses her growing influence over Saul to gain favor. Things come to a head in Episode 6 when Kazia asks to be a guest at the feast for Jonathan and Sara. Despite being extremely taboo, Saul grants Kazia’s request and not only invites Kazia to the feast, but also offers her a seat at their table, under the guise of her involvement in introducing Jonathan to Sara as the reason. Ahinoam is justifiably outraged and embarrassed. When she gets the opportunity to speak to Saul next, their words are anything but civil. Although Ahinoam has done her fair share of shady dealings, like sending David on a suicide mission and banishing Eshbaal, she tells Saul it has all been for him. When Saul tries to ask God for forgiveness for listening to her, she fires back with “God? You don’t worship God. You worship yourself.” Subscribe to our newsletter for House of David insights Hungry for more on House of David Season 2? Although this moment of frankness is refreshing, and it is highly rewarding to see Ahinoam finally confront Saul for his behavior instead of coddling or excusing it, the end result is not a good one for the queen. Saul literally grabs her by the hair and throws her outside the palace. Eshbaal seizes the opportunity to rub the rejection in his mother’s face, still bitter about her banishing him. Poor Mirab is the only one who witnesses the event and is heartbroken to see it. Eshbaal Kills Dina Eshbaal has been a hot mess for most of the series. The shadow of living second in line to the throne has made him develop a profound sense of self-loathing and indifference. Given to drink and one-night stands with women, he brings little to the royal family’s reputation. After being exiled, Eshbaal returns and vows to marry the young woman he is accused of taking advantage of, the daughter of a tribal leader. Dina is a breath of fresh air in House of David. While everyone else is wrapped up in plots and schemes and drama, Dina remains grounded and tied to the real world. As the daughter of a tribal leader, Dina was raised by her father as if she were the son he had hoped for, learning to hunt and kill game. Dina and Eshbaal’s romance is an unexpected and interesting plotline for Season 2. Dina asserts her independence whenever it is questioned and is more than a match for Eshbaal. Just as audiences are beginning to fall in love with their love for one another, things take a sudden and drastic turn. House of David has done a great job of hinting that Eshbaal returned a changed man after he was kidnapped and tortured, yet his hand hasn’t been shown yet. In the most shocking and unwelcome way, Eshbaal shows his true colors and pushes Dina to her death when she discovers he is sabotaging the kingdom. Mirab is as dumbfounded as viewers when she is the sole witness to the murder. As Eshbaal threatens and manipulates Mirab into his alliance, viewers are left to wonder what shocking events will take place in House of David Season 3, but sadly, Dina won’t be there to be a part of them.
