San Diego State junior earned scholarship late last season after big game at New Mexico and now assumes leadership role among SDSU receivers
Three years ago, Mekhi Shaw traveled 13 miles south from Scripps Ranch High School to San Diego State and joined the Aztecs as a walk-on cornerback.
The 5-foot-10 Shaw started to make noise in midseason, when he had a career-high four receptions against Hawaii. Three of them came on the game-winning drive against the Rainbow Warriors.Shaw’s biggest game was still to come. In the second-to-last game of the regular season, a 34-10 win at New Mexico, Shaw had a game-high — and career-high — six catches for 120 yards and two touchdowns.
Mekhi and Mayden developed what some came to call the M&M Connection. By season’s end, Shaw had 29 receptions for 349 yards and three touhdowns, ranking third in catches and yards and tied for first in TDs. That was to be expected. The Aztecs have spoken since spring about the tight ends being a focus of the offense. A deep running backs room also has received attention.“It just shows we have something to prove,” said Shaw, whose next opportunity comes Saturday at 7:30 p.m. against Idaho State at Snapdragon Stadium.
