With one scholarship remaining, Aztecs coach Brian Dutcher decides to give it to the 6-9 senior forward in his fourth year with the program
Alger began his college career at Seattle University as a skinny walk-on with the understanding that he might eventually receive a scholarship. But the California boy left after a redshirt season to transfer to SDSU, with a roster full of four-star posts and no guarantees that a future scholarship awaited.
Another rule didn’t change: They are full scholarships that, unlike most other college sports, can’t be divided among multiple players. That left Alger, who is 24 credits short of graduation. He initially entered the transfer portal as well with two years of eligibility remaining. “I just kept coming back to San Diego State. The experience we had last year, obviously, was absolutely insane, never forget it, dream come true. I just couldn’t leave this place.”Having your cake and eating it, too: He’s at SDSU … on scholarship.
He did, however, do something few college athletes ever do: Played in the NCAA championship game and hoisted a 3-pointer.The Aztecs lost three of the four players who rotated at the frontcourt positions. They added a pair of incoming freshman posts in 6-9 Miles Heide and 6-11 Magoon Gwath, but Gwath underwent ankle surgery and is expected to redshirt. Jaedon LeDee is the only returning big who played regular minutes last season.
