The allegations were reviewed by county and state authorities, and referred back to Trenton, officials said.
Three police captains and a lieutenant signaled their intention to retire from the Trenton Police Department last week amidst a payroll fraud investigation, two police sources told NJ Advance Media.
The four officers would retire as part of an administrative disciplinary settlement with the city. As many as eight officers are targets of the investigation, the sources said. Mayor Reed Gusciora on Monday evening told NJ Advance Media he took the unusual step to publicize an ongoing, internal matter because key points were lost in the reporting, namely that the police department and city uncovered the alleged wrongdoing and referred it to the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office.
Some of the officers in the investigation misrepresented their payroll records on just one or two days, and others on many days, so that could affect how a prosecutor would proceed, and how the city will handle discipline going forward, the mayor said.
