High winds today. Mostly cloudy with a winter mix developing later this afternoon.
CLEVELAND, Ohio - A major cold front will be racing through the area tonight. This front is no joke. You are going to have serious wind gusts in excess of 45 to 50 mph at times. When you combine that with bursts of heavy snow as the front rolls through, then you have blizzard like conditions at times. A shot of arctic air settles into the region by tomorrow morning. Wind chills could be near zero in some towns.
The wind will be picking up today in advance of the front. A south to southwest wind could gust over 40 mph at times. We will keep it dry until after 3 p.m. Temperatures will be well in the 30s to around 40 degrees early this evening. We expect a winter mix with the system containing mostly rain and snow. Visibility will be near zero where it stays snow.
Winds increase to over 45 mph gusts in spots tonight as the cold front is tracking through and behind it. The system winter mix will move out after midnight. Most will see a 1 to 3 inch snowfall with the system. Temperatures by morning crash well into the 20s. Winds tomorrow could gust to around 50 mph at times. Bitter cold with lake effect snow and snow squalls. Additional heavy snow is possible where snow squalls persist. Best chance of this will be east of Cleveland. The surface wind is expected to turn more northwest later tomorrow and Thursday evening. That could shift the lake effect snow farther west more into the Cleveland area. The team will be nowcasting that.
