15 years after Contagion was released, the not-so-sci-fi thriller that predicted the 2020 COVID pandemic is seeing renewed interest on streaming. Data from FlixPatrol shows that the film directed by Steven Soderbergh has found a new audience in the U.
S. and Germany in the past several days. The star-studded thriller is one of the top movies on PVOD services like Apple TV and Amazon, six years after the onset of the pandemic that brought the world to a standstill for over two years. Contagion was like a premonition in Final Destination that actually happened, documenting the global spread of a novel virus after it jumped from animals to humans. The film explores various perspectives on what might happen during a global pandemic. From the virus' origins to its unmitigated spread, the fear, chaos, and conspiracy, Contagion leaves no stone unturned. The film is bolstered by strong performances from its star-studded cast, including Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Laurence Fishburne, Marion Cotillard, Kate Winslet, Matt Damon, Chin Han, Bryan Cranston, Elliot Gould, and more. At 85% on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes and with over $136 million at the global box office, Contagion was a success. Matt Goldberg reviewed the film for Collider in 2011 and noted that it works on many fronts but struggles with excess, especially when simplicity can get the job done just as easily. "In its first hour, Contagion masterfully balances all of these plotlines to create a fast-paced and serious-minded scenario that will leave you aching to douse yourself in hand sanitizer," Goldberg wrote."We don't need big, operatic music cues when we have the pulse-pounding, nerve-rattling clock-tick of Cliff Martinez's brilliant score. We don't need a grand performance filled with big actions when we have smart performances that show the desperation of people trying to protect themselves and their loved ones," he said while pointing out where the movie falters. What Has 'Contagion' Director Steven Soderbergh Directed Lately? The venerable director has continued to deliver stellar films, with his latest directorial undertaking being the spy thriller Black Bag. Starring Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett, the film was a critical success, scoring 96% on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. However, Black Bag underperformed at the box office, grossing approximately $43 million worldwide. Contagion and Black Bag were produced on roughly the same $60 million budget, but the shift in film culture affected the latter negatively. Regé-Jean Page, Pierce Brosnan, and Marisa Abela also starred in Black Bag.
