As the fourth anniversary of Westworld's cancellation approaches, the sci-fi show is seeing renewed interest on streaming services. Data from FlixPatrol shows a spike in the HBO drama's popularity, especially on PVOD services like Apple TV.
This surge coincides with the continued release of Westworld's creators' new sci-fi drama, Fallout. The 2016 drama series concluded in 2022 after an untimely cancellation, and even though creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy never forgot it, they went on to produce one of the biggest shows on Prime Video, with Season 2 currently releasing weekly. Westworld premiered nearly ten years ago and was a hit. The first season of the twisty drama that combined sci-fi and western genres is currently rated fresh at 87% on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Based on Michael Crichton's 1973 movie of the same name, the series is set in an amusement park like no other. Here, humans come to indulge in their wildest fantasies with human-like robots. If you can pay for it, Westworld will host you. The show was lauded for its performances, with some of the biggest actors appearing on it in various capacities. Evan Rachel Wood, Thandiwe Newton, Ed Harris, and Jeffrey Wright graced all four seasons, with actors like Aaron Paul, Tessa Thompson, Luke Hemsworth, Hiroyuki Sanada, Zahn McClarnon, and more guest-starring in various seasons. Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy Would Like To Conclude 'Westworld' HBO made a shocking decision and opted not to order another season of Westworld, even when the show had at least one more left in the story. The network attributed the decision to increasing production costs and dropping ratings. Nolan and Joy had a five-season roadmap, and in 2024, they said they still wanted to bring their story to a proper end."Our philosophy from the beginning was you make sure each installment, each chapter should be somewhat complete, tell a good story and then you get a chance to keep going," Nolan said in an interview."But Lisa and I did have an architecture for the series and I’m big on getting a chance to finish these things. I think our hope is still somewhere down the line a chance to revisit that story, and I would hate to have spoiled it now if we get a chance to do so."
