For over three decades, the Jurassic Park franchise has been pivotal in the role dinosaurs play in modern pop culture, and not just as relics of prehistory. The acclaimed franchise began in 1990, when Universal Pictures and Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment bought the rights to Michael Crichton's novel Jurassic Park before it was published.

This leads to the formation of the Anomaly Research Center , jointly owned by the government and entrepreneurial scientist Philip Burton . At the center of Primeval is Professor Nick Cutter , an evolutionary zoologist whose expertise becomes crucial in identifying and neutralizing the predators suddenly roaming the streets. Although Cutter initially leads the group, leadership shifts as the series progresses, especially following his premature death, and characters rotate in and out with new ones introduced along the way. Over its five-season run, Primeval expands its scope beyond familiar prehistoric threats, particularly dinosaurs, which viewers have already encountered in Jurassic Park. The anomalies release worse creatures than viewers can imagine, from giant insects and marine reptiles to Ice Age predators, and even highly evolved future species that suggest humanity's eventual decline. Before airing on ITV, Primeval was rejected by the BBC, where it was originally intended for, but that didn't stop the sci-fi series from receiving glowing reviews upon its debut. Season 1 was a hit with viewers, with the first episode watched by over 7 million. The installment has also been labeled a critical success, though it earned a 67% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes. Season 2, on the other hand, wasn't as successful, but the series made up for it with Season 3, which critics described as one of the strongest chapters, featuring some of the best action sequences and original creature designs in the entire series. As for Seasons 4 and 5, the former received mixed reviews while the latter was a critical success during its initial broadcast on Watch. 'Primeval' Is The Perfect TV Replacement for Fans of 'Jurassic Park' There's a whole lot of productions out thereinspired by Jurassic Park, and many may even consider some of thema better option than Primeval. However, what ultimately sets Primeval apart is its long-form sci-fi approach, transforming dinosaur encounters into recurring events rather than being contained to a single incident. By repeatedly opening anomalies without warning, the series turns these creatures into a constant threat to society, placing them in everyday spaces like streets and residential areas rather than in controlled, isolated settings as seen in Jurassic Park. Not to mention, across five seasons, viewers get to spend more time with flawed characters as they evolve alongside the series' science and technology, while there's also room to explore long-term consequences that the Jurassic Park films rarely had time to address. Critics have also praised Primeval for its comprehensive story arc, tone, and choice of creatures, ultimately succeeding in becoming something unique in its own right, despite not having a perfect rating. Unfortunately, even with its satisfactory ratings, the sci-fi drama was cancelled by ITV after Season 3 due to financial issues. Still, it was later revived through a co-production deal with UKTV, allowing for Seasons 4 and 5 to be developed. Primeval was then cancelled for good following Season 5's disappointing ratings when it was broadcast on ITV.
