'Black Monday' star will talk about his new memoir during the San Antonio Public Library's Pop Madness! convention.
Actor Paul Scheer has a collection of Pop figures, including Grogu as a parade float, but the one he covets has yet to be produced: A Paul Scheer Pop. The good folks at Funko , who make the vinyl figures depicting pop culture icons galore, would have no shortage of possibilities to draw from.
Scheer’s many credits include Dr. Andre Nowzick, an awkward plastic surgeon, on “The League”; Donny Lawson, the scheming head page on “30 Rock;” a put-upon morning television show producer in “Veep”; and the voice of Lt. Commander Andy Billups, chief engineer on the animated series “Star Trek: Lower Decks.” So what role would he want preserved in Pop form? “I think I would pick my character from 'Black Monday,' in season two, when he is in Miami as a roller skating drug dealer,” he said. “I feel like that’s a good look — got some short shorts, shirtless, roller skates. It would be amazing.” POP CULTURE: Singer draws on experience as a Reagan High School athlete on 'The Voice' Scheer is spending a fair amount of time these days promoting his best-selling memoir, “Joyful Recollections of Trauma.” He’ll talk about it as part of Pop Madness, the San Antonio Public Library’s annual pop culture convention. The free family-friendly event takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Central Library, 600 Soledad. In addition to authors, it includes cosplay contests, crafts, anime and artists. Other guests include writers Celso Hurtado, Kazu Kibuishi and Ehigbor Okosun. Scheer is a big library guy. He made it a point to include them in the mix on his book tour, and he also promotes them on “How Did This Get Made,” the podcast exploring terrible movies that he hosts with his wife, June Diane Raphael, and Jason Mantzoukas. Recent episodes focused on “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen,” “Tammy and the T-Rex” and “The Shadow.” “We always really emphasize that you can get these movies through these amazing digital media services that your public library has,” he said. “I want to bring attention to libraries as a place evolving with the times, so I am always very supportive of the library, what you can get there, what they provide as far as spaces for the community. I’m a big fan.” NEW CON: 'Twilight' stars top guest list at new San Antonio horror convention He hosts a second movie podcast that explores the other end of the filmmaking pipeline: “Unspooled,” which he makes with Los Angeles Times film critic and San Antonio native Amy Nicholson. It began with a look at the American Film Institute’s list of the 100 greatest American movies ever made and has branched out since then. Recent topics include “Mulholland Drive,” “WALL-E” and “Interstellar.” “I get 'em on both sides,” he said. “And I love it because, for me, it’s just a conversation that I would be having with my friends. And we get a chance to put it out there for more people.”
