Swedish pop star Zara Larsson discusses her period of professional decline, public controversies, and personal growth in a candid interview with Vogue Singapore, reflecting on how she reclaimed her stardom and learned to ignore external judgments during a quiet season in her career.
Zara Larsson has reflected on her ' flop era ' after a quiet period during her career, following her earlier huge success, in a revealing interview with Vogue Singapore .
The Swedish singer, 28, appeared sensational in a series of bold, flesh-flashing photographs for the fashion magazine, modelling racy looks for an accompanying photo shoot. One daring outfit covered her modesty with black squares across a mesh panel, featuring a black collar detail, while she also posed in a Louis Vuitton swimsuit. Another striking look included a gem-encrusted silver bra adorned with feathers, complemented by a diamond and pearl necklace and matching earrings.
After a decade of striving to prove her worth in the music industry, Zara has successfully reclaimed her stardom with a dramatic transformation and a devoted fanbase supporting her. Her journey was not without hurdles; she faced career setbacks and public criticism stemming from high-profile feuds with Taylor Swift and Chris Brown, as well as controversy surrounding her comments about abortion.
Reflecting on her time out of the spotlight, she told Vogue Singapore: 'It taught me that you can't let strangers define your timeline.
' She added, 'Pop is brutal because everyone wants to declare something over so quickly. But careers are long if you keep showing up. I had to learn that a quiet season doesn't mean failure. It can be a rebuilding season, a learning season, a becoming season.
' While some recognize the star for her viral hit 'Midnight Sun,' others remember her from the summer of 2016, when 'Lush Life' and 'Never Forget You' propelled her to international stardom. Despite that success, Zara experienced a professional downturn and public scrutiny. She now views her so-called 'flop era' not with shame but as a source of resilience. She told ABC News: 'I've already had success and then my flop era.
And then it's like, "Okay, I flopped". So, it doesn't scare me anymore.
' She explained, 'I think, looking back, I just felt like I didn't know what I wanted to do. The project didn't start from here (gestures to inside). I just kept looking outside of myself. Like, "what do people want me to do, what do they like?
" It's the fact that you are being totally ignored, but you have to push through and be excited - while not being seen. It can be discouraging. But, my love for singing and music goes so deep into the fabric of my DNA and who I am.
' Zara's artistic ethos focuses on achieving longevity and leaving a mark on pop history. However, her outspoken and provocative demeanor, along with her passion for discussing politics and hot topics, often places her at the center of controversy. Earlier this year, she revealed she lost a $3 million (£2.23 million) brand deal after making a joke about abortion on TikTok.
The incident began when a fan wrote, 'I didn't know I was pregnant here but at least my baby got to hear "Midnight Sun" before I aborted it.
' Zara replied, 'I killed the performance and then you killed it after the performance purrrrrr. ' Addressing the backlash, Zara said in a candid video: 'I mean just lately, the abortion joke, which is very funny by the way, I lost a $3 million deal which is like what the f***.
If you don't agree with me thinking women should have access to abortion or that we can have a joking conversation about it then we are not meant to be partners. I don't give a f*** about it. You can send me a million DMs and send me a million comments about me being a bad person or a wicked witch, but I don't give a rats a*** because I'm so sure in my stance in that.
' Her activism extends beyond reproductive rights; Zara has also been a vocal champion of left-wing causes. In a furious social media rant, she declared her love for immigrants, trans people, socialism, and even criminals, reacting to an ICE-involved shooting of Minnesota woman Renee Nicole Good. This outspokenness underscores her readiness to engage in contentious debates, reinforcing her identity as an artist who values personal conviction over popular approval
