Asynchronous, event-based sensing is a new paradigm in computer vision, enabling lower data bandwidth, decision latency, storage resources and power consumption.

of an industrial camera series based on Prophesee ’s event-based Metavision® sensing and processing technologies. The uEye EVS ultra- compact camera leverages the processing speed and data efficiency of the IMX 636 neuromorphic sensor developed by, based in France, uses its event-based cameras for industrial automation, AR/VR , security healthcare and AoT™ applications.

Founded in 2014, thein October 2022. To date, it has raised $127M, and is in the process of closing its Series D funding round. Prior investors include 360 Capital Partners, European Investment Bank, iBionext, Intel Capital, Renault-Nissan, Robert Bosch Ventures, Sinovation, Sony, Supernova Invest, Will Semiconductor and Xiaomi. Prophesee’s focus is on providing its sensor chips, SDK and camera reference designs to end users like IDS and others who develop imaging systems for various applications. Conventional CMOS imaging cameras are designed primarily for human viewing, which means all pixel information is presented in every frame. When such cameras are used for computer vision in which portions of the scene are dynamic, information in most of the pixels is useless -are relevant. These sensors emulate human vision in which the receptors in the retina react to dynamic information . The basic idea is to use pixel architectures that detect changes in light intensity above a user-settable threshold and provideto the compute stack for further processing. The pixel readout is asynchronous and at much higher speeds since no photon integration occurs . The advantages of event-based sensing are significant – lower data bandwidth, decision latency, storage resources and power consumption .The IMX636 HD sensor is a joint venture with Sony, and utilizes the latter’s proprietary BSI Cu bump interconnect process to bond the silicon PD pixels to the electronic readout circuit. The PD is is a Sony design and the electronic readout is based on the core intellectual property developed by Prophesee. The PD and electronics are fabricated on 12 " wafers and yield ~1000 HD sensors per wafer.Lying In Wait On The Ground, Russia’s Best Attack Drones Devastate Ukrainian Convoys Framed CMOS cameras read all pixels at fixed intervals , Prophesee’s sensor provides data only from the event-triggered pixels at a 1 μs time resolution. The actual readout rate varies with the number of events and ranges from 1 MHz to 1 kHz . This results in and very low latency applications.Industrial sensing is a key application for the IMX 636 neuromorphic sensor for safety, quality, predictive maintenance and productivity related functions.IDS partnered with Prophesee to integrate the IMX636 HD sensor, Metavision SDK and software into the uEye camera series. IDS is a privately owned company, established ~30 years ago in Germany, and is a manufacturer of industrial 2D and 3D stereo image processing cameras. It has over 5000 products with ~2M cameras deployed globally, with a price range of $100-$10,000.For decades, we have developed industrial cameras based on consumer technology for machine vision applications. Event-based vision is a game changer; it is designed for machines, with an unmatched temporal resolution for fast processing and automated decision making. By ignoring motionless areas in its field of view, it generates 10 to 1000 times less data than conventional image-based variants. This saves our customers memory resources, power consumption and computing time, and enables IDS to offer cameras that can address new applications or perform more efficiently in existing ones". Of course, many applications that require the entire image for human viewing still require conventional cameras. A future possibility is to investigate stereo event-based sensing for 3D capture of dynamic scenes.an article about event-based eye tracking and its implications for AR/VR gaming headsets. It espouses key advantages like μs timestamp resolution, low power consumption and μs level latency. It does not mention specific suppliers, but these features happen to be similar to what Prophesee is developing in its next generation GenX 320The GenX 320 sensor is fabricated at STMicroelectronics using its proprietary BSI process with Cu interconnects.Qualcomm for supply of its HD IMX636 chips for integration into smart-phones, along with conventional 8-16 megapixel CMOS camera chips. The IMX 636 HD format is required to fuse events with frames at a 1:16 resolution ratio . The ability of event-based sensing as a cueing sensor for ROI LiDAR 3D imaging inare other potential applications. Luca Verre, Prophesee’s CEO is bullish about this new generation of computer vision and has this to say: “ Event-based imaging represents a paradigm shift in computer vision and AI, moving from a world of static frames to one of continuous, asynchronous perception. By mimicking the human retina, it unlocks unprecedented speed, efficiency, and safety, enabling machines to see the world as it truly is: dynamic, sparse, and rich with meaningful data”.
