Scripps National Spelling Bee Relocates to Washington D.C.'s Constitution Hall Amid Security and Logistical Shifts

The 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee moves to Constitution Hall in Washington D.C., bringing heightened security and logistical changes as spellers adapt to a new urban setting while competing for the national title.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee , a prestigious academic competition for young students, has relocated to a new venue this year: Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C.

The move from the suburban Gaylord National Resort to the nation's capital has generated a mix of reactions among the 247 participating spellers and their families. While many appreciate the historical significance and cultural opportunities of being downtown, others lament the logistical challenges, including crowded hallways, limited dining options, and the necessity of shuttle rides between the competition site and their hotel.

The venue change coincides with heightened security measures across the city due to the upcoming construction of an outdoor octagon on the White House South Lawn for a major event tied to President Donald Trump's 80th birthday and the nation's 250th anniversary. The bee's preliminary rounds commenced on Tuesday, with spellers tackling both onstage spelling and vocabulary challenges.

Following the elimination of 80 competitors, the remaining 167 faced a critical written test to determine the approximately 100 who would advance to Wednesday's quarterfinals. The competition is scheduled to conclude on Thursday night. The new setting at Constitution Hall, built in 1929 and located just blocks from the Washington Monument and the White House, provides a grand stage befitting the bee's national stature.

Spellers described the atmosphere as more appropriate for a national event, offering proximity to iconic memorials, museums, and the vibrant energy of the city. Three-time speller Oliver Halkett, 14, from Los Angeles, expressed his enthusiasm for being in the heart of Washington, noting the unique access to history and culture.

However, some families pointed out the practical disadvantages compared to the previous venue, where all accommodations, dining, and the competition stage were housed under one roof.

"Last year was better," said Arpit Aggarwal of Missouri, whose daughter is a repeat competitor. "Everything was in one place. " Security was visibly tightened at Constitution Hall, with guards, metal detectors, and explosive-sniffing dogs present at every entrance. This heightened alertness follows a recent shooting at a White House security checkpoint just three blocks away.

The Ellipse, the grassy area between the hotel and the hall, is currently fenced off for construction, forcing participants to rely on shuttle buses. Despite these hurdles, many spellers and their families made the most of the downtown location, attending a performance of "The Great Gatsby" at the nearby National Theater or exploring the National Mall.

The bee, which began in 1925 and had been held in suburban hotels since 2011, continues to evolve, balancing its rich traditions with the demands of a modern, high-profile event in the nation's capital
