US President Trump to Decide on Iran Ceasefire Extension
US-Iran CeasefireStrait Of HormuzIran's Nuclear Programme

US President Donald Trump has said he will decide imminently whether to extend the ceasefire between the US and Iran, but Tehran has cast doubt over the deal. A deal to extend the truce would also allow oil and gas shipments to resume through the Strait of Hormuz, while negotiators tackle tricky issues such as Iran's nuclear programme. Iran's nuclear material would be 'unearthed' by the US, but Tehran's semi-official Fars news agency has cast doubt on the deal, saying that the US President's comments were a 'mixture of truth and lies'.

US President Donald Trump has said he will decide imminently whether to extend the ceasefire between the US and Iran. However, Tehran has cast doubt over the deal, with Iran's top negotiator, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf , saying that Iran does not trust guarantees and words, only actions are the criterion.

A deal to extend the truce would also allow oil and gas shipments to resume through the Strait of Hormuz, while negotiators tackle tricky issues such as Iran's nuclear programme. The US President has said that Iran must agree to never have a nuclear weapon or bomb, and that the Strait of Hormuz must be immediately open for unrestricted shipping traffic.

Iran's nuclear material would be 'unearthed' by the US, but Tehran's semi-official Fars news agency has cast doubt on the deal, saying that the US President's comments were a 'mixture of truth and lies'. The agency also said that there was no provision to destroy nuclear materials in the sides' memorandum of understanding, and that the claim was fundamentally baseless.

The US-Iran war has so far killed thousands of people, mainly in Iran and Lebanon, and caused global economic pain by pushing up energy prices due to Iran's effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Oil prices fell and stocks rose on Friday over the potential deal. In related news, Pakistan's foreign minister, Ishaq Dar, arrived in Washington on Friday for talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Kazakhstan has also signalled that it is willing to take Tehran's stockpile of uranium, enriched close to weapons-grade levels, if the US reaches a deal with Iran. The deal would also need to include the release of $12 billion from Iran's frozen assets, and the lifting of sanctions on Iran. Iran also wants sanctions lifted, US forces withdrawn from the region, and for any peace deal also to end Israel's offensive in Lebanon.

Israel has displaced hundreds of thousands of people with a push deep into Lebanon in pursuit of Iran's main ally, the Hezbollah group. Israeli strikes have pummelled Lebanon's south and east as well as its capital, Beirut, killing more than 3,200 people, according to Lebanon's health ministry. Israel has said 23 of its soldiers and four civilians have been killed over the same period.

The deal would also need to include the removal of mines from the Strait of Hormuz, and the resumption of shipping traffic. Mr Trump said that ships trapped in the strait may start to go home, and that no money would be exchanged 'until further notice'. This is a possible reference to Iran's demands for toll payments in the strait, war damage reparations or a release of Iranian funds frozen abroad.

The US President also said that he would be meeting in the Situation Room to make a final determination on the deal. The Situation Room is the White House's nerve centre for monitoring global crises. The US President's statement in full was shared via Truth Social, and included a message to his supporters saying 'Say HELLO to your wives, husbands, parents, and families from me, your favourite President! '

President Trump Jokes About President-Elect Al Green's Defeat, Anticipates Peaceful SOTU SpeechPresident Trump Jokes About President-Elect Al Green's Defeat, Anticipates Peaceful SOTU SpeechIn response to the defeat of Rep. Al Green (D-TX) in a Democrat primary runoff, President Donald Trump ridiculed the congressman while acknowledging he will miss his screaming and violent waving of a cane at him during his State of the Union addresses. Green's defeat was followed by a change in the congressional district boundaries and his conflicts with President Trump and House Republicans. Christian Menefee, his opponent, has been focusing on immigration issues and was decisive in winning the runoff, over 2/3 of the votes. Menefee and Green both opposed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton's deportation fund lawsuit and had differing opinions on the terrorist status of Iran. Green also pursued multiple impeachment attempts against Trump over his strikes on Iranian nuclear sites in 2025. Menefee's victory was praised for reflecting 'Texans' voting preferences' and also for challenging the new congressional map that moved Green's base into a new congressional district. President Trump was rumored to have forgotten about Green during his first SOTU address but has later mentionedO him while acknowledging his departing presence, expressing his foresight for a peaceful Son of the Union speech. Although Green's departure, his involvement and Senate approval of the resolution will play a role in the upcoming impeachment showdown as the Democrat-controlled House impeachments stand a slim chance against a possible Republican Senate acquittal. However, Newsom's defeat could potentially affect the Hispanic vote, although they made up less than 40% of the votes, which was far less than several previous elections in 2020-present.
