Energy firm Terra Innovatum has entered into a partnership with ATB Riza Calzoni to manufacture SOLO micro- modular nuclear reactor s.The partnership aims to deliver the SOLO micro- modular nuclear reactor at scale.
ATB Riva Calzoni is a global supplier and manufacturer of nuclear components.The SOLO nuclear reactor is intended to form the basis for a scalable modular energy platform from MWe to GWe-class. One unit of the SOLO micro-modular reactor is designed to deliver approximately one megawatt of electricity.In August 2025, the company announced significant progress in the licensing process for the Solo micro-modular reactor, which is currently under review by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission .Recent partnership and past submissions to the US NRCTerra Innovatum submitted its Regulatory Engagement Plan to the NRC in January 2025. Since then, it has been advancing regulatory discussions with the agency consistently.Among these, the company had submitted the Principal Design Criteria topical report for SOLO. The PDC defined the fundamental safety and design requirements that form the basis for the reactor’s licensing review. According to a press release by the company, the NRC has indicated its intent to complete the review process by the end of 2025 and to issue a Safety Evaluation of the PDC report by April 2026.Meanwhile, the recent multi-phase collaboration agreement with ATB will support SOLO development by advancing component readiness and accelerating production scale-up to deliver a market-ready clean energy solution that positions Terra Innovatum for commercial launch.“Signing this MOU with ATB is a major inflection point as we move closer to making the first commercial deployment of the SOLO micro-modular reactor a reality,” said Alessandro Petruzzi, CEO of Terra Innovatum. “Our shared commitment to quality and innovation will enable us to deliver reliable, affordable clean energy where it’s needed most, quickly and at scale.”Terra Innovatum and ATB will work closely to conduct joint feasibility studies and advance component design, safety evaluations, engineering validation, and regulatory and project risk assessments.More about the SOLO micro-modular nuclear reactorThe SOLO micro-modular nuclear reactor design features a solid heterogeneous composite moderator and is intended to accommodate both traditional zircaloy-clad low-enriched uranium fuel or, when available, LEU+ and high-assay low-enriched uranium fuels.The nuclear reactor can work with different fuels, taking advantage of LEU+ and HALEU for both larger power with the same duration or larger duration and equal power of SOLO X-1. For heat removal, the reactor will rely on helium gas, which eliminates the need for water from the reactor coolant system. Moreover, the company believes that the reactor will have autonomous operation, and it will be highly modular and factory mass-produced to be rapidly deployed on a global scale.Coming to safety, the company claims that the reactor requires no exclusion zone. The emergency zone plan is confined within the operational boundary, defined by a 2.5-meter-thick concrete biological shield encircling the reactor.“SOLO’s core is inherently safe, incapable of melting or exploding. It is engineered to deliver constant power throughout its operational life, utilizing a minimalist instrumentation and control system while operating fully autonomously,” the company says on the website.The MMR is designed to deliver reliable, carbon-free energy and heat to critical infrastructure projects and remote locations where traditional power sources are limited or unreliable, according to the company.
