“Selena y Los Dinos,” created with input from the Tejano superstar's family, will premiere at the acclaimed Sundance Film Festival next month.
A new documentary chronicling the early days of singer Selena Quintanilla ’s career and that promises “never-before-seen footage” of her personal life will premiere at the acclaimed Sundance Film Festival next month.
“Selena y Los Dinos,” a feature-length documentary made with input from the late singer’s family, will make its world premiere at the festival as part of its 2025 U.S. documentary competition, Sundance announced. The festival describes the film as a celebration of the Tejano superstar’s “life and legacy” and a chronicle of her musical journey from performing at quinceañeras and other local events to becoming the “Queen of Tejano Music.” The film will be available for public viewing online Jan. 30 through Feb. 2. Quintanilla among its producers. Castro, who garnered praise for her 2022 documentary “Mija” that screened at Sundance three years ago, interviewed numerous people close to Selena and was given access to the family’s “personal archive,” the festival said. The late singer’s husband, Chris Perez, talked about the documentary’s selection to Sundance on social media. “We are honored to have our documentary, 'Selena y Los Dinos’ at this year’s Sundance Film Festival,” he wrote on Facebook. The Quintanilla family worked with creators of the 1997 film “Selena,” starring Jennifer Lopez, and collaborated with makers of the 2020 Netflix drama “Selena: The Series.” Selena, who died in 1995, was recently honored with a National Medal of Arts award, which was presented at the White House in October. Selena’s sister accepted the honor. The 2025 Sundance Film Festival runs Jan. 23-Feb. 2, primarily in Park City, Utah. It is the largest independent film festival in the United States, created by actor Robert Redford more than 40 years ago.
