Dolores Bustamente-Romero, an asylum seeker from Mexico who lives in Wayne County, returned home Thursday after a judge ordered her release. She was detained without warning April 22 during a routine ICE check-in in Buffalo. Dolores has been given 30 days to decide if she wants to navigate the law and try to stay in the United States or voluntarily deport herself, according to Carly Fox of the New York Immigration Coalition.
If she chooses to leave, she has 60 days. A pair of protests were held in downtown Rochester calling for her release, saying she was wrongfully detained. Supporters say she's been in the U.S. for more than two decades and has been fighting her deportation case for 12 years.
An ICE spokesperson previously told 13WHAM that Bustamente-Romero illegally came to the U.S., was issued a final order of removal from the Department of Justice in 2018 and "received full due process" after several appeal efforts. The deputy accused the driver of violating Florida’s wireless communications while driving law by using a handheld device behind the wheel. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office announced an arrest Thursday for a homicide in Perinton.
Two people were hospitalized with minor injuries and a spill was being cleaned up after a crash Thursday morning on Route 31 in Perinton, according to police. Police are investigating a toddler's death on the city's northwest side. A former Geneva police officer who reached a guilty plea after being accused of selling drugs received his sentence Thursday in Ontario County Court.
