A 20-year-old woman from Croydon, south London, died from an infection in her abdomen just days after getting a gastric sleeve operation in Turkey. The inquest heard that the woman, Morgan Ribeiro, travelled to Istanbul for the procedure and became unwell during her return flight to the UK, leading to an emergency landing in Belgrade, Serbia, where she died.
A British woman died from an infection in her abdomen just days after getting weight-loss surgery in Turkey , an inquest heard. Morgan Ribeiro, from Croydon, south London, travelled to Istanbul on January 5, 2024 for a £2,500 gastric sleeve operation .
Three days after the surgery, the 20-year-old was given medical clearance to fly back to the UK by her operating doctor. But during her return flight to London Gatwick with her partner, Jamie Brewster, she became 'very unwell'. The aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing in Belgrade, Serbia, where she was admitted to an intensive care unit, and she died on January 13.
Ms Ribeiro's cause of death was due to 'diffuse inflammation of the retroperitoneum' and because of the 'rupture of the intestinal wall'. It is suspected Ms Ribeiro's small intestine was punctured during the surgery in Turkey, leading to the infection and her death. But Assistant Coroner Laura Stephenson said she was unable to record a conclusion because surgeon Dr Serkan Bayil, who carried out the procedure, has not responded to repeated requests for information
