FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTUU) - Fairbanks Mayor David Pruhs has denied allegations by the firefighter union that city leaders acted in bad faith during contract negotiations . The mayor maintained that the city could not afford the contract presented to them, which would have violated the city's charter. Mayor Pruhs also refuted claims that the city expressed a willingness to go to arbitration in June 2024, stating that it was the union that initiated the arbitration process.
Critics, including John Ringstad, claim the city cannot afford certain provisions of the contract. Supporters, such as Crystal Tidwell, argue that the city has achieved much of what it wanted through negotiations. Union President Nick Clark expressed disappointment, suggesting that the city never intended to ratify the contract
