Harrell addressed Diaz’s claims in an interview with KOMO News on Thursday.

Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell sat down with KOMO News Senior Reporter Chris Daniels for his first in-depth conversation over the State of the City after he passed the midpoint in his term.

“As a native of Seattle, we are very proud of our LGBT+ community. We embrace it. This is what we’re known for in this city,” Harrell said. "This matter involves allegations that the former chief provided untruthful information during 2023OPA-0286 and violated the order to not communicate about this case after receiving multiple admonishments from OIG stating, 'to maintain confidentiality of this investigation, you are ordered by authority of the Chief of Police, not to disclose information about this investigation except with your representative or attorney," the OIG letter states.

In an Oct. 24 letter, the OIG's office said Tompkins had provided 'untruthful information' during an Office of Police Accountability investigation. While Diaz hasn't spoken publicly since being placed on leave this week, his attorney, Jacob Downs, told KOMO News the city's actions have destroyed his nearly 30-year career in law enforcement.
