Mayor Bruce Harrell is set to sign legislation Friday that will exempt new developments in downtown Seattle from the design review process.
The move aims to boost economic activity and vitality in the city’s center while reducing the time and cost associated with completing new projects,The legislation is part of the mayor's Downtown Activation Plan and will create a three-year exemption for residential, hotel, and research and development projects in downtown, South Lake Union, Lower Queen Anne, First Hill, and a portion of the Greater Duwamish Manufacturing and Industrial Center.
Harrell's office said it expects the exemption to cut six to nine months off the planning and design process, and it hopes the move will allow projects to begin construction quicker. The 1 p.m. bill signing ceremony will include Harrell, Jon Scholes, President and CEO of the Downtown Seattle Association, Rick Yoder, owner of Wild Ginger and The Triple Door, and Tejal Pastakia, founder and managing partner of Pastakia & Associates.
