CLEVELAND , Ohio - The Ohio Department of Transportation is installing automated traffic queue warning systems on several Cleveland -area highways as part of a statewide initiative first announced in 2024.
The systems use cameras to detect when traffic begins to slow and back up. When that happens, a sign further up the road alerts approaching drivers. “We’re trying to get drivers to slow down and pay extra attention before a potentially dangerous situation,” ODOT spokesperson Matt Bruning said.ODOT has identified locations on I-90, State Route 176 and I-71 in the Cleveland area. The agency appeared before a planning commission to seek approval for the SR-176 location. Officials said traffic studies were conducted to determine placement of both the cameras and signs. The $1.6 million project is scheduled to begin in August and is expected to be completed in the summer of 2027.Bruning said secondary crashes caused by traffic congestion are a primary driver of the project. “Many times, if it’s a crash that’s up ahead, the resulting crash from all the congestion is typically worse, in many cases, than the original crash,” Bruning said.“You could see stopped traffic, you could see a queue of stopped traffic, and we need people to pay attention all the time because of that, but what we are targeting here are areas subjected to those kind of conditions,” Bruning said.
