Mat-Su Borough School District decided remote learning days are no longer an option for bad weather after learning they might not count toward required classroom days.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Mat-Su Borough School District has decided remote learning days are no longer an option for bad weather after discovering they might not count toward required classroom days. John Notestine, a spokesperson for the district, said Tuesday via email that Mat-Su opted to cease remote days after communication from the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development Commissioner, Deena Bishop, was sent to superintendents.
Notestine quoted the communication to superintendents from Bishop on Dec. 7, saying “E-learning days should not be expected to count as school days for ‘brick-and-mortar’ schools.” Notestine went on to say until clarification is made, the district, “will not be utilizing remote learning days in place of weather-related closures.” On Wednesday, Mat-Su posted to their Facebook page announcing the weather-related closure due to icy conditions, specifying, “This is not a remote learning day.”The Anchorage School District has not publicly announced intentions to change its approach to remote learning. Corey Allen-Young, spokesperson for the district, said the matter is currently being discussed “with the intention of making a decision in the near future.” Andy Holleman, School Board President, said on a phone call with Alaska’s News Source that while he had no information on what decision would be made, an announcement from ASD on remote learning policies could come as soon as Thursday.2 human bodies recovered from debris of ‘Wind Walker’ capsizingDOT introduces revised alternatives for Seward to Glenn Highway connector ‘If it wasn’t Michael, it was someone we cared about too’: Fisherman’s family left in limbo after two bodies found in Southeast‘If it wasn’t Michael, it was someone we cared about too’ : Fisherman’s family left in limbo after 2 bodies found in Southeast
