The television doctor and NHS paediatric emergency consultant details the emotional fallout after coming out as gay, the collapse of his seven‑year marriage, and the healing he found within the LGBTQ+ community and his family.

Dr. Ranj Singh , a well‑known paediatric emergency medicine consultant and television presenter, has opened up about the personal turmoil that followed his decision to come out as gay.

The 46‑year‑old, who has become a household name through regular appearances on This Morning and Morning Live, described his life as having "fractured and fallen apart" after revealing his true sexuality, an admission that ultimately led to the breakdown of his seven‑year marriage to pharmacist Sulvinder Samra. Singh's story, first told to the Big Issue, recounts a journey that began with a traditional Sikh wedding in 2005, a flourishing NHS career, and a seemingly perfect domestic life in a £500,000 East Dulwich flat.

Yet, despite ticking every box on his personal checklist - a stable career, a loving partner, a home of his own - he found himself haunted by an inner disquiet that therapy eventually helped him confront.

"I had the career I'd always wanted, I always wanted a home of my own. I'd ticked all my boxes. So the big question was, why am I still not 100 percent happy? Why does it still feel like something's not right?

" he explained, noting that therapy forced him to explore a part of his identity that had long been suppressed. The revelations about his sexuality triggered a cascade of difficult conversations and emotional reckonings. Singh confessed that the period leading up to his coming out in 2009 was marked by a sense of everything "fracturing" - his marriage, his relationships with friends and family, and the idyllic future he had imagined.

After disclosing his truth to his wife, the marriage dissolved, and he faced the added strain of navigating his parents' reactions. It took a decade before he felt able to speak to them, bracing for potential rejection. Instead, he was met with profound love and acceptance: his father whispered "We love you, no matter what," while his mother, visibly shaken, affirmed that nothing would change their bond.

Singh described that moment as the most loving and proud he had ever felt, emphasizing how essential unconditional parental support had been to his healing. Since the divorce, Singh has found solace and a sense of belonging within the LGBTQ+ community, describing it as a "chosen family" that allowed his "wings finally [to] unfold and then take off.

" In 2025 he publicly confirmed his relationship with actor James Colebrook on Instagram, noting that the acceptance he received from his new community helped him celebrate his identity fully. The former spouse's family, however, continues to grapple with the past. Jemera Samra, the father of Singh's ex‑wife, told MailOnline that seeing Singh on television still evokes painful memories, and that the divorce left a lasting impact on their family.

Despite lingering hurt, he acknowledged an eventual acceptance of the reality. Singh's narrative highlights the complex interplay between cultural expectations, professional achievement, and personal authenticity, illustrating how the courage to live truthfully can ultimately lead to both personal liberation and the rebuilding of supportive networks
