The motion comes one week after a public city council meeting was briefly interrupted after Alexandra Dalton brought a hidden sword inside a cane into the chamber.

CINCINNATI - Several council members and the vice mayor proposed a motion Wednesday asking the city administration and clerk of council to review possible improvements to keep City Hall employees and visitors safe.

The motion comes one week after a public city council meeting was briefly interrupted after police confirmed Alexandra Dalton brought a hidden sword inside a cane into the chamber. The call for a 15-day review was proposed by council members Mark Jeffreys, Anna Albi, Ryan James and Vice Mayor Jan Michel Lemon-“They did get through security, which is concerning in and of itself, so there is a lot of concern here on the third floor, not just electives but staff, around what is the security protocol here at city hall and security,” Council Member Mark Jeffreys said.

“I mean, there is a lot of rhetoric that is concerning, I think we often try to call it out and I think that’s where council rules come into play, we need to look at council rules,” he said. “I think the most obvious one is what are we doing on the first floor to prevent somebody coming in with a sword or a knife? ” Jeffreys said.

“Due to an increase in threats and threatening rhetoric directed towards city employees, we seek to reevaluate our current procedures. We further seek to explore security measures on the third floor and add any necessary updates based on findings to protect our employees’ safety and well-being. ”“Obviously, I’m Jewish, so that is concerning, given what is happening in the world. It has its effect on not just me but my family,” he said.

Jeffreys said that comments made by Dalton during the public comment of the meeting the week prior were also a concern for him.

“It wasn’t an isolated comment, it was in combination with that individual saying that they will die for their people and they have nothing to lose. That is concerning,” he said. Dalton faces several charges, including resisting arrest, inducing panic and carrying a concealed weapon. She’s due back in court next month.
