A new survey reveals a dramatic shift in UK holiday plans for summer, with nearly 62% opting for staycations. The trend is fueled by 90s nostalgia, a desire for 'back to basics' experiences like beach walks and fish and chips, and a wish to avoid costly, disrupted foreign travel. Classic destinations like the Lake District, Brighton, and Bournemouth are topping travel lists, while road trips and motorhome travel see a significant upswing.
A significant shift in British holiday preferences is underway this summer, with a compelling new trend seeing many travelers abandon traditional foreign getaways in favor of domestic staycations.
The phenomenon, dubbed "ditching Marbella for Margate," is driven by a potent combination of soaring travel costs, lingering post-pandemic travel disruptions, and a powerful wave of 90s nostalgia that is reshaping vacation aspirations. Research from temporary vehicle insurance specialists GoShorty, based on a poll of 2,000 people, reveals that nearly 62 percent of Brits are planning a staycation for the summer months.
Strikingly, seven in ten respondents who would normally consider a holiday abroad are now choosing to holiday within the United Kingdom. This pivot is not seen as a compromise but as a conscious return to simpler, more authentic experiences. The driving forces are a desire to avoid the stresses of modern travel-specifically airport queues, expensive flights, and widespread disruption-and a deep-seated craving for the foundational memories of a classic British summer.
Three-quarters of those planning a staycation explicitly state they are looking forward to a "back to basics" summer, free from the logistical headaches of international travel. The research meticulously charts the specific, nostalgic experiences that define this ideal summer. At the very top of the list is the simple pleasure of walking along a beach with sand between one's toes, which six in ten Brits cite as their most anticipated holiday activity.
Culinary classics are equally central: nearly half of respondents are eagerly awaiting fish and chips, while a quarter specifically name eating a traditional '99' ice cream with a flake as their favorite staycation activity. The sentiment extends to broader family-focused pastimes; just over one in four want to create more family memories, and more than one in three aim to take more family photographs.
Other beloved traditional activities making a comeback include paddling in the sea, going on long countryside walks, enjoying rainy day trips to the pub, staying in caravan parks, buying sticks of rock, and visiting seaside arcades with their iconic 2p machines. This collection of activities paints a vivid picture of a nation yearning for the uncomplicated, sensory joys of a seaside holiday from decades past. This collective yearning is directly influencing destination choices, breathing new life into classic British resorts.
The poll identifies the Lake District as the top holiday destination, with 13 percent of the vote, celebrated for its natural beauty including England's highest peak, Scafell Pike, and its largest lake, Windermere. It is closely followed by the vibrant coastal city of Brighton on 12 percent and the traditional seaside town of Bournemouth on 11 percent. In total, almost 62 percent of staycationers are heading for the coast, with countryside escapes and town breaks also proving popular.
The desire to explore is heightened, with a whopping 90 percent of Brits expressing a goal to get to know the UK better this year. More than a third are plotting a road trip, planning to drive an average of 191 miles. There is also a notable surge in interest for motorhomes, with one in twenty aiming to travel the country in one, attracted by the promise of freedom and spontaneity.
As Phil Evans, Managing Director at GoShorty, notes, motorhomes offer an increasingly attractive option for those wanting a flexible, on-the-road adventure. This trend underscores a broader movement: a deliberate, nostalgic, and explorative re-engagement with the British landscape, marking a potential lasting change in the nation's holiday culture
