A heroic bystander, Hammed Danmole, risked his life to break up a machete fight between teenagers in Burgess Park, London. He said he acted because he could not bear the thought of one of them dying.
On a sunny Sunday afternoon in Burgess Park, Camberwell, south London , a shocking scene unfolded as three teenagers brandished machetes and engaged in a violent brawl.
While most onlookers screamed or filmed the chaos on their phones, one man ran towards the danger without hesitation. Hammed Danmole, a 45-year-old Nigerian-born property investor and father of a 17-year-old boy, was playing his weekly Sunday league football match when he noticed two black-clad hooded youths enter the park. Minutes later, a third arrived on a scooter, and an argument erupted. Within moments, two of the boys pulled out large machetes and began slashing at each other.
A third joined, pinning one victim to the ground while both attackers hacked at him with their knives. The footage, widely shared on social media, shows the terrifying encounter that could have ended in tragedy. Mr Danmole said he could not stand by because he saw his own son in those teenagers. I have a 17-year-old boy, and when I looked at them, I saw him.
I would do anything to stop these young boys from killing each other, he told The Times. He sprinted from the goalposts, shouting, Oi, stop that, what are you doing? He managed to pull the attacker off the pinned victim, causing two of the knifemen to run one way and the third another. He yelled at them to go away.
After the incident, some people criticized his actions, saying he should have left them alone. But Mr Danmole explained his reasoning: If I did not stop it, and one of those boys died, I would not have forgotten it for the rest of my life. He believes knife crime is rooted in poor parenting and is strict with his own son, ensuring he knows where he is going.
He noted that in Nigeria, young boys carrying knives would be disciplined straight away, but in London, it feels like crime has worsened since he arrived. He rarely sees police officers now, unlike when he first came. Metropolitan Police figures indicate that violent crime, sex crime, theft, and drug crime have all increased in London since Sadiq Khan became mayor.
Mr Khan defended his record, using 2019 homicide figures to criticize those who talk down the capital for political gain, but the Conservatives accused him of gaslighting Londoners about crime. Four teenagers, aged 16 to 17, were arrested and charged with offences including possession of a bladed article, affray, and possession of an offensive weapon. Mr Danmole, now hailed as a hero, remains humble, stating that he simply did what any father would do.
His actions have sparked conversations about community responsibility and the urgency of addressing youth violence in the UK
